The European Union has taken a significant step towards eliminating mercury from dental practices and other products. The Council recently adopted a regulation to ban the use of dental amalgams completely and to prohibit the import, export, and manufacturing of other mercury-added products. This move aligns with the EU’s zero pollution ambition and aims to eradicate the remaining use of mercury within the EU.
Current regulations already prohibit the use of dental amalgam for treating children under 15, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers. However, the new rules extend this prohibition to EU members starting January 1, 2025. Exceptions will only apply when a dental practitioner deems the use of dental amalgam strictly necessary to address the patient’s specific medical needs.
Furthermore, exporting dental amalgam will be banned from January 1, 2025. The EU’s prohibition on manufacturing and importing these products will be enacted on July 1, 2026. Additionally, six types of mercury-containing lamps will face a manufacturing, import, and export ban by December 31, 2025, and December 31, 2026, respectively.
This comprehensive regulation underscores the EU’s commitment to reducing mercury pollution and protecting public health. For more details, you can read the official press release here.
