CEREC Same Day Restorative Dentistry

What is CEREC®?

Chairside Economical Restorations of Esthetic Ceramic or CEREC® for short is a new method of using state-of-the-art equipment to construct tooth restorations. CEREC® employs computer-assisted design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) to offer same-day restorations for patients. This new technology is revolutionizing ceramic restorations such as crowns and veneers for dentists and patients alike eliminating the wait between preparing the restoration and receiving the finished product. With CEREC®, the technology gets to work while you sit comfortably in your dental chair, which is both economical for you and for us here at Nashville Restorative Dentistry. The restorations created are metal-free and tooth colored ensuring that your tooth is restored to its natural beauty, strength, and function. With CEREC®’s CAD-CAM technology, ceramic restorations are completed, start to finish, in one single visit to our office.

The CEREC® Process

CEREC® uses CAD-CAM technology to design and then mill custom restorations all on your same day visit to our dental practice. So how does it all work?

  • Exam and Preparation

Before you get started, our team will determine if CEREC® is right for you. Depending on how much of a healthy tooth structure is still intact, you may need no more than a simple filling or you may just need a crown. After we review your options with you, Dr. Ryan Jones will begin the process of administering anesthetic and will prep your tooth for its restoration service by removing any decay and weakened tooth tissue.

  • Optical Impression

In order to make the desired restoration, a 3-dimensional image of your tooth or teeth that need to be restored will be created from a digital camera scan. This three-dimensional image will then be used to mill the restoration without us needing to take a messy impression of your teeth. This also means you get to skip any and all horrible tasting impression material. Nothing for you to gag on here! The computer and CEREC® 3D software will then convert the digital image of your teeth into a three-dimensional virtual model of the prepared restoration.

  • Milling Unit

This device is used to used to create the custom restoration needed for your tooth/ teeth. Based on the original color of your teeth, Dr. Jones will carefully select the correctly colored ceramic block, pop it into the machine,  and in just a few minutes the milling device will create the restoration needed.

  • Placing the Restoration

After your restoration had been made, we’ll try it on to ensure that you get the proper fit and bite. Once we’ve confirmed that everything is ready, we’ll polished the restoration and bond it into place. This means that no temporary restoration is needed and no return trip is necessary, saving you time and money.
