Choosing an effective teeth whitening system

Today there is an endless variety of teeth whitening products available in dentist offices and over the counter, which can make choosing the teeth whitening system that is right for you an overwhelming decision. With whitening tubes of toothpaste, gels, rinses, trays, whitening strips, and more readily available, patients often ask us what type of whitening system is best. Below we answer some common questions that we hear from patients when it comes to choosing a teeth whitening system and discuss our preferred whitening method.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is the process of bleaching teeth to remove stains and discoloration for a brighter smile. Products used in teeth whitening typically utilize either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide which break down the surface and intrinsic stains resulting in whiter teeth.

Which teeth whitening procedure is right for me?

“Your teeth tend to be whiter when you are younger. Eating foods that are colored artificially like coffee, tea, and wine, cause your teeth to become yellow and stained”, according to Healthy Smiles of Georgia.

Since the effectiveness of teeth whitening procedures varies based on the type of discoloration you are experiencing, it is important to consult with a dentist before trying the latest over-the-counter treatment. Typically, patients with a yellow-toned discoloration respond the best to traditional teeth bleaching products, while brown-toned teeth do not respond as effectively, and gray-toned teeth may not respond at all.

Another factor that is important to consider when choosing a teeth whitening procedure is any previous dental work including fillings, crowns, and veneers, as teeth bleaching will not be effective in these areas. It is also critical to consider the cause of your tooth discoloration, as teeth whitening will not work as effectively or at all on discoloration that resulted from injury or medication.

Our preferred teeth whitening system

At Nashville Restorative Dentistry, we use the KöR Whitening Deep Bleaching™ System, a highly effective teeth whitening process that delivers consistently beautiful results. Unlike other teeth whitening systems that deliver mixed results that are often disappointing, this whitening system is “widely recognized as the world’s most effective teeth whitening system.” It can even be successfully used to treat discoloration that has not previously responded to other whitening agents, including tetracycline-stained smiles.

Aside from its consistent and beautiful results, the KöR Whitening System is also a safe and healthy option for teeth whitening that will not damage your smile. Unlike many other whitening systems, KöR combats tooth sensitivity and causes little to no sensitivity during the whitening process. This system also does not contain many of the chemical additives and preservatives that are found in other whitening products on the market.

How does it work?

One of the best parts of our teeth whitening system is that most of the process can be done in the comfort of your own home. The first step of the process involves coming into the office so that our team can take impressions and create custom trays for your use. After the tray has been created all you have to do is sit back and relax while you utilize the teeth whitening treatment at home over a two-week period. Following two weeks of at-home use, you could have a white and bright smile! Once you have finished your at-home treatment, we will have you come in for a follow-up visit and any touch-ups that are needed. For more stubborn discolorations, in-office treatment of a more concentrated KöR formula is available.

Previously the only way to significantly alter the color of these teeth was to cover them with bonding, crowns, or veneers. Caleb M. Estes, DMD, FAGD, is a dedicated professional with a strong academic background and extensive postdoctoral education. After graduating from Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville and earning his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the SIU School of Dental Medicine, he has constantly pursued advanced training. He has earned a Fellowship with the Academy of General Dentistry and is a graduate of the prestigious Kois Center. Before joining Nashville Restorative Dentistry, he served in the US Army as a general dentist and a Captain, deploying alongside US and NATO forces to Afghanistan in 2015. He also completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program with the Army during this time.

Dr. Estes’ passion is to provide excellence in clinical dentistry and patient care while using the best restorative and preventative materials available.
