Whether it’s stained teeth, gaps, chips, or alignment issues, cosmetic dentistry offers life-changing results that go beyond aestheticsโ€”it restores your ability to smile freely and live fully.

A better smile is within your reach. Together, weโ€™ll discuss what you want to change, outline the treatment choices that exist, and detail the necessary steps to restore your smile and confidence.

Cosmetic vs. Restorative Dentistry: What's the Difference?
Dr. Ryan Jones of Nashville Restorative Dentistry explains the key differences between two major fields of dentistry: Cosmetic and Restorative. While Restorative is literally our middle name, Dr. Jones and the team at Nashville Restorative Dentistry are also leading experts in restoring patients' confidence through Cosmetic Dentistry, with services including teeth whitening, veneers, orthodontics, and gum contouring.

So when weโ€™re looking at the two different types of dentistry between Cosmetic & Restorative, Cosmetic is typically gonna be more focused on elective things that are changing the appearance of your teeth, typically your smile. So we talk about things like Whitening, a non-invasive way to make your teeth brighter & whiter. We talk about things like Bonding or Veneers, something that goes over the teeth and the smile that can change the look of their straightness, their length, their position, their color; you can really recreate a complete smile by adding something over it. Restorative dentistry is more typically focused on repairing something that has a problem. So a tooth that has a cavity that needs a filling, a tooth thatโ€™s broken or worn that needs to have something put over it like a crown. Thatโ€™s typically what we think of when we say Restorative dentistry. Restorative dentistry, with the way we use it to repair larger cases though, can actually still be cosmetic. So when weโ€™re doing a Full Mouth Rehabilitation, not only can we repair whatโ€™s broken & worn and recreate the youthful appearance of a healthy smile, weโ€™re still doing Cosmetic Dentistry. So we can repair what is unhealthy or broken and still recreate something that youโ€™ll be absolutely in love with when you look at it in the mirror.

What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry typically includes elective services with the goal of improving the appearance of your teeth or overall smile, whether thatโ€™s making adjustments to existing tooth color or positions, altering gum line symmetry, or placing something over the existing teeth like veneers.

But cosmetic dentistry is about more than simply having a good-looking smile. Nashville Restorative Dentistry offers a complete array of cosmetic dentistry services designed to restore your health and confidence, allowing you to fully enjoy your life again.

What’s the difference between Cosmetic and Restorative dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry focuses on enhancing the appearance of your teeth and smileโ€”whether through whitening, reshaping, or alignmentโ€”while restorative dentistry aims to bring function back to damaged or missing teeth. At Nashville Restorative Dentistry, we specialize in both, blending artistry with advanced dental science to deliver beautiful, functional outcomes.

What Cosmetic Dentistry services does Nashville Restorative Dentistry provide?

So many things can prevent you from being confident in your smile. Thatโ€™s why we never stop learning and working to implement the best techniques, materials, and procedures to handle any situation you want to improve.

Learn more about the personalized cosmetic dental services Dr. Jones and Dr. Estes offer patients in Nashville, Brentwood, Franklin, and Cool Springs:

  • Teeth whitening: A simple, safe, and non-invasive way to refresh your smile. We use the powerful KoR Whitening System to remove external and deeper internal stains, restoring a naturally bright white smile. It’s far more effective than over-the-counter options.
  • Porcelain veneers: Veneers are thin ceramic shells bonded to the front of your teeth to change their shape, size, color, and alignment. We’re proud to offer several options for veneers including resin, traditional porcelain, and prepless DURAthin and Micro-thin veneers which require minimal alteration of your natural teeth while delivering stunning results.
  • Invisalign clear braces: Straighten crooked or gapped teeth discreetly with Invisalign. This system uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gently reposition your teeth over timeโ€”no metal brackets or wires required.
  • Cosmetic Dental crowns: Restore both function and aesthetics with lifelike crowns crafted from durable, tooth-colored materials. Perfect for teeth that are worn, chipped, have large cavities, or are structurally compromised.
  • Gum Contouring: Gum line symmetry plays a major role in your smileโ€™s appearance. Even beautiful teeth can look displeasing when gum contours are noticeably uneven or asymmetrical. Gum contouring can make short teeth appear longer and a smile look more symmetrical. Gum grafting can repair areas of recession by moving the gum tissue back to its proper position. Whether you have a gummy smile or uneven gum lines, we offer solutions to improve proportion and balance.

Who can benefit from Cosmetic Dentistry?

You might be a candidate for cosmetic dentistry if you experience:

  • Discolored or stained teeth
  • Chipped, worn, or uneven teeth
  • Gaps or misaligned teeth
  • A gummy or asymmetrical smile
  • Self-consciousness about your appearance in photos or social settings

You donโ€™t have to settle for a smile that doesnโ€™t reflect how you feel inside. Our team can help you reclaim your confidence with results tailored specifically to you.

Is Cosmetic Dentistry worth it?

Cosmetic dentistry is more than just an investment in appearance. It can:

  • Enhance your self-confidence
  • Improve oral health and function
  • Deliver natural-looking, long-lasting results
  • Help you feel more at ease in personal and professional interactions

FAQs

Are there non-invasive cosmetic dentistry options?

Yes! Non-invasive options like teeth whitening, dental bonding, and no-prep veneers offer beautiful aesthetic improvements without drilling or damage to the natural tooth structure. Teeth whitening brightens your smile, while bonding repairs minor chips, gaps, or discolored areas using a composite resin. No-prep veneers are thin porcelain coverings applied directly to teeth with no or minimal alteration of the underlying tooth in advance. These options are ideal for patients seeking subtle changes without compromising tooth health.

How does cosmetic dentistry affect oral health?

Cosmetic dentistry improves oral health by addressing issues like misaligned teeth, which are harder to clean and prone to higher occurrences of gum inflammation and cavities. Procedures like crowns and veneers can strengthen chipped, cracked, or broken teeth and protect against further damage while also restoring a natural appearance. Replacing missing teeth with implants prevents further bone deterioration and maintains dental alignment of the surrounding teeth. By enhancing aesthetics, these treatments often also lead to better oral hygiene habits, which leads to improved long-term oral health.

Can cosmetic dentistry address receding gums?

Yes, cosmetic dentists can address receding gums with gum grafts or gum contouring. Gum grafting restores lost tissue, covering exposed roots and improving aesthetics. This procedure is often accomplished with the help of a Periodontist, a dentist specializing in gum health and related surgeries. Gum Contouring reshapes the gumline for a balanced and symmetrical appearance. Both procedures improve the smileโ€™s harmony and can protect teeth from sensitivity or decay caused by gum recession. Consult a dentist specializing in cosmetic gum treatments to determine the best approach for your needs.

Can I combine multiple cosmetic procedures?

Absolutely! Many patients opt for a smile makeover that combines treatments like whitening, veneers, and orthodontics or gum contouring. A detailed consultation allows us to design a personalized plan based on your goals and budget. Combining procedures saves time and creates a cohesive result. Advanced technology, such as digital smile design, ensures each treatment complements the overall aesthetic. Please feel free to ask questions and discuss your options for an efficient and transformative overall smile enhancement.

Is cosmetic dentistry suitable for older adults?

Cosmetic dentistry can benefit patients of just about any age, especially older adults. Common treatments include implants for missing teeth, whitening for age-related discoloration, and veneers or cosmetic crowns to restore worn, chipped, or broken teeth. Cosmetic restorative procedures are tailored to account for factors like bone density and oral health. Cosmetic dentistry helps seniors maintain confidence and functionality, improving their quality of life. Discussing goals with your dentist ensures treatments align with your health and aesthetic priorities.

Are cosmetic dentistry results permanent?

Very few things are permanent if the timeline is long enough. Cosmetic results can vary depending on the procedure. Treatments like teeth whitening may require touch-ups, while crowns or implants are long-lasting and potentially permanent with proper care. Veneers can be stable for decades if properly placed and cared for, but habits like grinding may shorten their lifespan. Maintaining results involves good oral hygiene, avoiding staining foods, and attending regular dental checkups. We can provide aftercare guidance to ensure the best longevity of your cosmetic enhancements.
