Many of us snore occasionally, but chronic loud snoring can be more than a mere inconvenience. It may be a symptom of a sleep disorder called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
While OSA is common in those with unhealthy weight or enlarged tonsils or adenoids, it can affect anyone. OSA occurs when air flow becomes wholly or partially obstructed when the throat muscles relax when sleeping. For OSA patients, breathing stops and starts over and over throughout the night. When the brain senses oxygen deprivation, it jolts the body to arouse and apply more effort to breathe. Although you won’t fully wake up and will probably be unaware this is happening, you’ll continually repeat this cycle, which will result in diminished sleep quality.
Sleep occurs in four stages, with the most regenerative sleep happening during the third stage. Sleep apnea patients rarely reach this deep level of sleep. Disrupted sleep causes several unpleasant symptoms, including:
Sleep apnea oxygen deprivation is also linked to systemic conditions like stroke, heart disease, hypertension, and depression. Indeed, sleep apnea isn’t something to joke about. If you suffer from this sleep-disordered breathing problem, seek treatment now!
Many medical practitioners treat OSA with CPAP machines. This device pressurizes air and forces it past your airway through a mask placed on your mouth and nose. A CPAP unit prevents your throat muscles from collapsing, keeping the airway open while you sleep. CPAP treatment works, but many patients don’t continue treatment because of noise, discomfort, claustrophobia, and other factors.
CPAP therapy isn’t your only sleep apnea treatment choice. Our office treats OSA with a custom-fitted oral appliance (oral appliance therapy) called an MRD (mandibular repositioning device). This sleep apnea device treats OSA by positioning your lower jaw forward, which prevents the tongue and throat from blocking your airway while you are sleeping. A sleep apnea mouthpiece is effective for treating mild-to-moderate OSA cases.
You no longer need to treat sleep apnea with a machine strapped to your head. Oral appliance therapy is an effective sleep apnea treatment that offers several benefits, including:
