How do same-day dental crowns work?

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. You can now understand why we always use it as an acronym! CEREC technology combines advanced software and hardware capabilities to enable us to complete your entire dental crown treatment right here in our office in a single visit.

Traditionally, this process takes weeks and even months in some offices. Since your restoration takes a while to manufacture at an offsite lab, you must wear a temporary crown to protect your prepped tooth. Once your crown is ready, you’ll book another appointment for placement. If there are any fit or esthetic issues, the crown must be returned to the offsite lab and you will have to return another day for placement. This process can be lengthy and frustrating.

CEREC technology has revolutionized this process by bringing computer-aided design/manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technologies into our dental practice. When you come in for your crown appointment, we’ll take digital impressionist scans (no gooey mess!) of your teeth before and after preparation. Then, we’ll use our design software to design your restoration to the exact specifications of your tooth and bite. Next, our in-house milling machine will fabricate your crown as you wait! After confirming proper fit in the mouth, we will glaze and fire the crown in our porcelain oven and give it a final polish before cementing it onto the tooth.

What are the benefits of CEREC same-day dental crowns?

  • Single-visit convenience: CEREC technology allows us to complete your dental crown, inlay, onlay, or bridge in as little as 90 minutes. This convenience means you have less down time, return to your day quickly, and don’t have to come back for a second visit to get a numbing injection again for the final crown delivery.
  • No temporaries: Same-day final restorations allow you to dodge the inconvenience of temporary crowns. Temporaries often don’t fit comfortably, can look unnatural, and even come loose requiring another office visit for recementing.
  • No impressions: Cerec utilizes a wand like camera to take digital scans of your teeth, replacing the messy, gag-inducing manual impressions you may remember.
  • Precision: Digital impressions and design result in high-quality restorations created with pinpoint precision.
  • Durability: Just because single-visit dental crowns are created quickly doesn’t mean they compromise on quality. Our CEREC restorations are milled from the same ceramic and zirconia materials as we would get from a dental lab and are just as durable.

Patient Testimonial

Issue: Two badly infected and broken upper front teeth as well as poor alignment of his teeth overall.

Solution: Through a process involving extractions, bone grafting, and braces we were able to achieve a healthy, infection free point which allowed dental implants to be placed and utilized to replace the two missing front teeth.
